SACOM Visits Cub Scout Pack 17

Monday, December 22, 2008

November 17 Paul Tabit and Jim Butler represented SACOM during a meeting of Pack 17 of the Cub Scouts in Scott Depot, WV. Assistant Pack Leader Shawn Bayliss had invited SACOM to talk to youngsters about model railroading and SACOM's activities.

The evening started with a PowerPoint presentation about the history of railroading in St. Albans. The 50 or so young boys and their parents listened and watched as we explained how the C&O coming through St. Albans had affected the community over the years. Several youngsters asked questions and commented on trains and rail travel.

After the PowerPoint presentation and a short question and answer session, we moved to another room where we had set up tables with displays showing the different scale models and models of different eras.

Paul Tabit explains the meaning of scales, and their relationship to real trains to inquisitive Cub Scouts.

Several Pack 17 members examine and discuss the examples of popular modeling eras.
In addition to the static displays, the Greater Kanawha Valley N Scalers set up an operating N scale layout for the kids. Dave and J. C. Leake turned out to be the stars of the evening with their C&O streamliner and NYC coal drag running through their very busy layout. Each Cub Scout was also given a booklet on Getting Started in Model Trains, presented by the World's Greatest Hobby folks.

Dave Leake of the Greater Kanawha Valley N Scalers talks to a young Cub Scout about their N scale layout.
